Bug Out Big Bike Fun!!

We hope everyone is getting excited about the bug out!! It is going to be such an awesome time and we certainly did not want to forget about those who love dual sport and ADV rides. Big bikes need love too!

Our awesome ADV Committee chair, Gary Chandler has a message for anyone wanting to take on the adventures!

“DVTR BUG OUT ADV /DS ROUTE INFORMATION

There are 3 separate routes leaving from Rocket MX property.

PA Flight 93 Memorial ride is 136 miles to the destination.

I included a SLAB route that is 76 miles to the monument.

Slab route can be used for return route or both ways, your option.

Tuscarora Forest Dual Sport loop is 157 total miles from Rocket and return.

The ADV LONG loop to Shippensburg University and return is 224 miles for the loop.

The ADV long loop has a couple short cuts that will reduce the mileage if desired.

I did not have a chance to pre ride the PA 93 route so it will be a total adventure doing this ride.

It is an established route that I extracted the part closest to Rocket MX and routed to the Memorial so it should be good to go. I included a return route to Rocket VIA slab which will be quicker and shorter ride to or from the monument. There are some off route challenges if you chose to do them on the way to the monument. A water crossing and a rocky downhill. I didn’t ride them so this will also be an adventure.

The long ADV route was pre ridden as well as the short cuts however I had to reroute the short cuts due to some private roads that I originally tracked as well as road closure due to construction. I do not know if the construction will be ongoing and moving forward as I saw many cuts in the roadway for drainage being installed.

This loop was really fun, and I estimate it to be 80/20 paved / dirt. Tons of twisty roads and beautiful scenery (even though I did it in the rain) with overlooks. There is a creek crossing at the lower part of the route, the creek was not high, and doable with any bike however there is also a go around if you fear the small creek. There are a couple of covered bridges along the route, one you will go through and another you can view from the route. The route will take you to the Shippensburg University and you can also stop in Shippensburg for some great BBQ for lunch. All riders should be able to ride this route as long as you can make the gas stops, the first gas stop is about 20 miles and the next is about 100 miles from that. There is another gas stop OFF the route if needed that you will have to travel 4 miles of route to get to. If you can go 120 miles you will not need to detour. The rest of the route has plenty of gas stops on the route, but I also included some more off route just in case. Great route all in all.

Tuscarora Forest D/S loop is a total of about 157 miles from Rocket to return.

I estimate it to be 75% DIRT and unimproved road.

The first gas stop is about 13 miles from Rocket. If you can do 130 (Ish) miles or more then you do not need any OTHER gas stop. There is a gas stop 13 miles off the track about 35 miles into the ride. You will also pass the first gas stop on your way back 13 miles before the end.

I rode this route (partially) on Wednesday, in the rain, and it was SLOPPY muddy. The roads were freshly dirt coated and graded and I think they put clay down because it was an ice-skatingrink! If it stays wet out there for the event, you will definitely need knobbies, and a power wash for your bike and gear. There are highways near the route that you can navigate if you find it’stoo much for you or want to cut the day short.

Print out the maps and take them with you if you are going to ADVenture out on these routes!

For the 2-day event I hope these routes keep you busy for at least part of the time.

If you are going to download ALL the routes, view only the one you are riding as they cross paths a couple times. All the routes have direction arrows, but if your device does not show direction of travel, refer to the map sheets so you don’t get confused when the route crosses its own path.

I tried to separate the way points at intersecting routes to better follow the correct path so you may have to zoom in when you come to that part if you do not have directional navigation.

AS YOU ALL KNOW, THERE IS NO SUPPORT ON THESE RIDES SO TAKE A BUDDY!!“

Here is a folder full of the files to upload to your gps and some maps. We will have printed out maps at the bug out for you to check out as well.

Hope to see you all there!

Trying to decide what bike to take for the dual sport. Is this like the Michaux dual sport with a lot of rocky single track or more of a KLR650 kind of ride?
